What we eat directly affects how we feel. We’ve all heard the phrase “you are what you eat.” So why are we putting ingredients in our bodies that we can’t even pronounce let alone have a clue what they are. If something is stable on a shelf for more than a year does that not make you wonder what is in there?
I have struggled with my weight since early childhood. Always having trouble eating a nutritious balanced diet and lacking the commitment to exercise. Now I think it is important to preface here that all my struggles with my weight have always been related to my overwhelming love of food. When I was living in Toronto, Ontario I attended culinary school and loved every aspect of it and grew a couple sizes there alone. Working as a chef was less glamorous than expected though as most know it’s a tough life that requires a lot of sacrifice that I wasn’t willing to give at the time.
At the age of 27 I finally found a love for exercise and outdoor activity when I moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. After burning so many calories from different activities, I was still having problems with my diet as to what I should be reaching for. Protein shakes were a staple for me but I hated the option I had for bars as quick snacks. My options were either incredibly sweet, chalky or had unbearable texture. This is where protein by bent was born. I thought to myself there must be a way to make something that tasted great using natural ingredients. Things that are important to me were creating a product that was local, natural, organic, gluten free, dairy free and have no processed sugars.
I want people to feel the way I do when eating these bars, “you can have your cake and eat it too!”
